Rugby World Cup 2011
New Zealand promised a 'stadium of four million' and is now
preparing to become a nation of four million hosts when it welcomes
20 competing nations and more than 60,000 international rugby fans
for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
The IRB Rugby World Cup (RWC) is one of the largest sporting
events in the world. Held every four years, the inaugural
tournament took place in New Zealand and Australia in 1987 and
returns to New Zealand in 2011.
The eyes of the world will be on New Zealand as host of the 2011
World Cup, giving the country an opportunity to raise its profile
on the global stage as a holiday and event destination. More than
60,000 international rugby fans and 2,000 international media are
expected in New Zealand for the tournament, which will be seen by
an estimated global audience of over four billion.
As well as the spectacle of the RWC tournament, 2011 will see a
national festival where locals and visitors alike can experience
the best New Zealand has to offer.
