New Zealand's adventure tourism and scenic backdrop features heavily in a reality television episode that has been nominated for a Directors Guild of America (DGA) award.

Hit United States' show 'The Biggest Loser' filmed two episodes in New Zealand in 2011. The Auckland episode has picked up a nomination for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Reality Programmes.

Up against reality shows such as Master Chef, Fear Factor and The Amazing Race, the nomination is a first for Director Neil De Groot.

Tourism New Zealand's General Manager Western Markets, Gregg Anderson, said having New Zealand showcased in two episodes, one filmed in Auckland and the other in Queenstown, was a major coup.

"To have an episode of The Biggest Loser showcasing New Zealand nominated for a DGA award is very exciting and shows that New Zealand can provide a fantastic backdrop to create reality television."

Promoted in the USA as 'can't miss', the episode began with contestants flying Air New Zealand to Auckland. They then visited the Sky Tower and completed a sky jump, went sailing on an America's Cup racing yacht and ran 5km across Bethels Beach in a contest to win a helicopter ride to Waiheke Island.

An audience of 7.2 million viewers tuned in to watch the Auckland episode.

Tourism New Zealand helped bring the show to New Zealand by hosting The Biggest Loser contestants and crew in February for almost two weeks of challenges.
The winners will be announced at the 64th Annual DGA Awards Dinner on Saturday, 28 January 2012 in Los Angeles.
