North Asia

China is the world's fastest-growing economy and offers enormous opportunities for New Zealand tourism. A rapidly growing middle-class and the freeing up of international travel restrictions, combined with an increasing awareness of the outside world, are all fuelling China's appetite for international travel.

However, many New Zealand operators are still finding their feet in China and spend and length of stay of visitors from this market are comparatively low. Tourism New Zealand's focus in China is as much on growing the quality of visitors, as it is on driving awareness and travel bookings.

China's neighbours - South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong - are also important source markets for New Zealand. Arrivals from Korea have been in decline in recent years but the market is showing strong signs of recovery, with arrivals expected to rebound in 2010.

Tourism New Zealand manages all four of these markets from its office in Shanghai, with teams also reporting to the North Asia Regional Manager from Seoul and Hong Kong.
