North Asia
China offers New Zealand tourism one of the biggest growth
opportunities in the world. A rapidly growing middle-class and the
freeing up of international travel restrictions, combined with an
increasing awareness of the outside world, are all fuelling China's
appetite for international travel.
However, many New Zealand operators are still finding their feet
in China while awareness of New Zealand remains relatively low.
These are challenges the New Zealand tourism industry will rapidly
need to overcome if the destination is to secure a permanent place
on the preference lists of Chinese travellers.
China's neighbours - South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong - are
also important source markets for New Zealand, although arrivals
from Korea in particular have been in decline in recent years.
Tourism New Zealand manages all four of these markets from its
office in Shanghai, with teams also reporting to the North Asia
Regional Manager from Seoul and Hong Kong.
