Facebook users share their New Zealand experiences

Date Published: 29 March 2011

A marriage proposal on top of Mt Tongariro and a video of mischievous Keas in Arthur's Pass are among the scores of creative entries to a Tourism New Zealand competition launched on March 24.

The myNZ competition encourages kiwis and visitors to New Zealand to submit photos or videos of their New Zealand experience to Tourism New Zealand's New Zealand 100% Pure Facebook page to be voted on by people around the world.

Hundreds of entries have been submitted for voting so far, and the photo or video with the most votes when the competition closes on 28 April will win flights to New Zealand for the entrant or an overseas friend. Flights for two will also be awarded to one lucky-voter, courtesy of Air New Zealand.

Tourism New Zealand Chief Executive Kevin Bowler said the competition was part of a wider campaign designed to let the world know that New Zealand is open for visitors.

"By using the power of social media, everybody who loves New Zealand - kiwis and travellers alike - can share with the world reasons why Aotearoa warrants their attention.

"The activities and experiences are endless: relaxing at a beach or hiking through your local bush, taking to nearby hills, exploring our great museums and galleries or simply enjoying good wine, food and company at any one of our great cafes, restaurants or wineries, or mountain biking, which is a favourite of mine."

The myNZ competition is the second phase of a wider effort to promote the message that New Zealand remains a spectacular, welcoming and hospitable destination.

Earlier this month Tourism New Zealand ran "New Zealand is Open" advertising in Australian and UK Sunday newspapers. The ads were made up of images provided via Facebook by New Zealand tourism operators.
