220 Aussie agents experience a journey through Middle-earth

More than 220 Australian travel agents departed New Zealand earlier this week, fizzing with enthusiasm after spending six days exploring New Zealand on Tourism New Zealand's Mega Famil. 

The Mega Famil is one of the largest familiarisation and training events Tourism New Zealand has ever run out of Australia.

Our aim with the Mega Famil is to get high quality travel agents here to experience as much as they can, have an amazing time and go back home to sell more of New Zealand.

Over the six days, the groups bungy jumped, rafted, walked, OGOed, kayaked and ate their way around nearly every region of New Zealand, fuelled by untold cups of coffee and the strength of manakitanga that only New Zealand can offer.

Initial feedback from the 200 agents has been extremely positive and we're looking forward to hearing more from these agents as they return home and start selling New Zealand.

The Mega Famil has been months in the planning and has only been made possible due to the support received from our travel partners Air New Zealand, Virgin Australia and the New Zealand tourism industry.

Through these partnerships we were able to offer these agents the trip of a lifetime, leaving them even more inspired to promote everything New Zealand has to offer.

The group participated in a day-long New Zealand training workshop in Auckland, meeting with Regional Tourism Organisations and operators before heading out to experience New Zealand first-hand on one of 12 itineraries around the country.

Itineraries and training focused on the products and regions that Tourism New Zealand showcases through its Australian marketing activity including Coach Touring, North and South Island Touring and Special Interest.

Fully integrating trade into our marketing campaigns allows us to more effectively generate and convert consumer interest.

Trade training is a core element of the work that Tourism New Zealand undertakes, as travel trade are an extremely valuable tool in reaching potential visitors. 

Bringing agents to New Zealand for a first-hand look at the product, and providing them with the tools they need to sell the country more confidently, has obvious pay-offs for us.

It increases their destination and product knowledge which in turn serves to act as motivation for them. Agents will be more motivated and confident in promoting a product they know and have experienced for themselves.

Our work with these agents continues now that they have returned home with them completing the Tourism New Zealand 100% Pure New Zealand Specialist Programme, now in several core markets.

This online trade training programme allows agents to further upskill in different regions allowing them to reach the 100% Pure New Zealand Specialist status.

While they were in the country the agents were encouraged to make the most of Tourism New Zealand's social media channels, sharing their New Zealand experiences even further.
