Explore New Zealand Programme hits 1,000 discount offers

Tourism New Zealand’s discount programme for international travel agents and travel media has reached 1,000 discount offers for the first time since it was established in 2000.

Explore New Zealand is designed to complement Tourism New Zealand’s familiarisation trips (famils).

It enables accredited international travel sellers and media travelling independently to partake in a wider range of New Zealand products and experiences while they are here – essentially converting a travel professional’s private holiday into a self-drive famil.

Discounts are offered for accommodation, attractions, activities, tours and transport. Typical discount offers are 50 per cent off or two-for-one offers for the Explore pass holder and their partner.

Every year around 450 accredited Explore New Zealand pass holders visit New Zealand.

In order to qualify for the programme, Tourism New Zealand first confirms the applicant is a frontline travel seller or journalist with a commission to be published on their return home.

Social media influencers can also take advantage of the programme, such as Australian Tim Coulson (26,000 Instagram followers), who posted some spectacular images on a recent trip to New Zealand.

Further coverage by Explore pass holders has recently appeared on the blog Legal Nomads, and in influential publications The Independent, The Huffington Post and The National Geographic Traveller.

Explore has been running for 15 years and started as a small leaflet of published discounts, before becoming a larger book published every two years, and has been online for the last three years.

Fully integrated into Tourism New Zealand’s database, operators are able to list products to be added to the programme alongside their business listing details, which are pulled through to newzealand.com and the travel trade sites.

If you are a tourism operator and would like to participate in the Explore New Zealand Programme, you can do so by signing up or logging in through the operator database.
