Outshining runners-up South Africa and Australia, New Zealand collected the prize for Best International Destination for Adventure at the awards ceremony in Mumbai on 22 June 2015.
It was the third time the country was selected by Lonely Planet magazine readers, who vote for the best destination under each category.
Steven Dixon, Tourism New Zealand’s Regional Manager – South and South East Asia says the win confirms that Indian travellers have a strong awareness of the tourism products on offer in New Zealand, “To receive this award for a third year running is a great endorsement for the New Zealand adventure tourism industry.”
There has been a marked increase in Indian visitors to New Zealand in recent times, thanks in part to the success of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.
“During the tournament we worked hard to showcase the country’s offerings beyond the stadium and we know that Indian fans travelled widely during the tournament.
“Receiving this award confirms that Indian travellers see New Zealand as much more than just a great place to hold sporting events”, says Steven.
Queenstown, Wanaka, Abel Tasman National Park, Milford Sound and Franz Josef Glacier have previously been ranked by the Lonely Planet Magazine India Travel Awards as the top five most famous destinations in New Zealand for all seasons.
Neha Bhola, Tourism New Zealand’s Country Manager India, was at the event to collect the award.
