Taranaki puts outdoor gear to the test

Major American magazine Backpacker, have put a range of outdoor gear through its paces in Taranaki and on the Whanganui River. The gear was being tested for inclusion in the magazine’s annual ‘Editor’s Choice Awards’.

“It’s incredibly valuable exposure for New Zealand with over a million people expected to see the New Zealand content via a range of social media posts and two magazine articles, says Bjoern Spreitzer General Manager, Americas and Europe.

The magazine is read by 320k Americans with a further 900k plus following Backpacker’s social media.

“Around 28 million Americans are actively considering New Zealand as a holiday destination; it’s a huge market that is well supported by growing air capacity.”

“The crew were wowed by their experiences climbing Mount Taranaki and rafting down the Whanganui River.  They were even happy to strike some wet weather to help really challenge the gear they were testing.”

The United States is New Zealand's third-largest international tourism market. Visitor numbers from the US on are on the rise supported by increased air capacity and a growing number of direct airline routes.

Backpacker is an American publication that features information on wilderness hiking and adventure. It has been published since 1973 and is read largely by independent professionals with a strong interest in the outdoors.
