On the back of
new-look logos, Qualmark has announced the creation of two
separate sectors from the current umbrella category Self Contained
& Serviced accommodation.
The industry has signaled Motel Apartments and Serviced
Apartments as possible names for the sectors however names for the
two new sectors and the criteria for each will be discussed and
finalised after a period of consultation.
The new Motel Apartments sector will apply to traditional motel
accommodation while the second sector will cover mainly high rise,
strata titled apartment properties.
Changing to two sectors is a logical move to ensure that the
accommodation categories are clearly understood by international
and domestic tourists alike said Qualmark Chairman and Tourism New
Zealand General Manager Tourism Operations Paul Yeo.
"Initial feedback from the industry is that they are supportive
of the changes however we look forward to the consultation process
and developing these sectors and the criteria for them further,"
said Mr Yeo.
The change to the sector has come about as a result of a steady
increase in the number of serviced apartments and the continuing
development of the motel sector.
The consultation will be complete by the end of June, with
criteria confirmed by the end of July.
The new sectors will be 'live' from 1 September.
