General InformationThe following are some ideas you may want to keep in mind when planning your trip. Meals All meals (outside of the Kiwi Link program) and incidentals will be the responsibility of each Delegate. It would be recommended that you budget approximately JPY5,000 (Approx NZ$60) per day. Dress Code "Business casual" attire is recommended for Kiwi Link Japan 2008, however branded shirts are a good idea (coloured polo shirts with your company logo). Climate Summer in Japan is very hot and humid and temperatures in August will be around 30 degrees during the day. We suggest you bring cool wear with you . Inside hotels the temperature is cooler so we suggest wearing layered clothing. Currency/Travellers Cheques It is recommended that participants travel with Japanese Yen. Should any participant wish to carry travellers cheques, these should be issued in Japanese Yen. We advise that it can be difficult to get TC’s changed here and can take a long time. Currency exchange can be done at airports, hotels or at any of the metropolitan banks. Always check commission rates in hotels before exchanging money. Please be prepared to show your passport as a form of identification when using travellers cheques. Credit Cards All major credit cards are accepted in Japan but not all shops and restaurants have credit card facilities. Mastercard or Visa are most commonly accepted. Ensure that all limits have been confirmed prior to departure from New Zealand. Eft-Pos Cards (ATMS) If you carry an Eft-Pos card with the symbols PLUS, INTERLINK, STAR, GLOBAL, CIRRUS, ACCESS on the back then you may be able to access your bank account directly from Japan. A bank fee will be charged for this service. We suggest you check with your bank prior to departing New Zealand. Tipping Tipping is not customary in Japan, but is welcomed at your discretion. Tips are not included in your participation fee. Electricity Voltage is 100 to 110volts AC. Please bring an adapter for computers and other appliances as the pin plug is different from New Zealand. Telephone calls Telephone calls and/or using the Internet from your hotel room can be very expensive. The best alternative is to purchase a telecom calling card or similar. We would advise that you kindly check with your mobile phone provider to see if your mobile phone is capable of roaming in Japan. 3G Vodafone phones should work in Japan connecting to the Softbank network. Presentation Equipment New Zealand presenters will each have an assigned table each day from which to present. It is suggested you present from either a laptop or flipchart. Access to power outlets will be by request on registration. For participants using laptops, it is essential you bring a power adaptor with you. Small easy-to-build in-stands for display are suggested for those who have these available. It is suggested that you use flipcharts, images and other materials that can be efficiently moved from venue to venue. Don't forget an adapter plug for laptop connections. The power in Japan is 100 - 110 volts. Travel agency staff will see approximately 15-20, 15-minute presentations throughout the course of the workshops. The more creative and interactive your presentation is the more memorable your product will be. We strongly advise that your presentation materials are in Japanese. Translation Assistance Experienced interpreters are available to delegates at an extra cost (approximately NZ$470 per day). Whilst Tourism New Zealand Japan and Air New Zealand staff members will be on hand at all events, we will not be able to concentrate solely on any one supplier for the entire time. Travel and Medical Insurance Tourism New Zealand does not arrange for travel or medical insurance on behalf of New Zealand Delegates. Furthermore, Tourism New Zealand does not provide for any indemnity for loss or injury suffered by participants while in Japan. We recommend that you purchase a comprehensive medical and travel insurance policy prior to departure. Vaccinations Please contact your local GP if you have any concerns, but generally no vaccinations are required to visit Japan.
