Market Overview
Australia is New Zealand’s largest inbound tourism market, accounting for almost a third of arrivals in 2007.
In the year ending April 2008, a total of 966,067 Australians visited New Zealand. This number is expected to rise on average by 3.6% annually between 2006 and 2013. Visitors from Australia have generally been to New Zealand more than once. Since 1997 about 70% of Australian visitors have reported they are not on their first visit.
Tourism New Zealand’s ‘What’s On’ marketing campaign will continue to target Australians to come more often, visit the regions and come in the shoulder seasons. The likelihood is that Australians will become an even larger percentage of our total visitors in the future, however their lower average spend than other markets may affect total expenditure figures over time.
