Visitor Satisfaction

Each year Tourism New Zealand commissions independent research to gain a sense of how satisfied our international visitors are with the experience New Zealand provides.

Making sure that international visitors have an enjoyable experience is the key to the future of the tourism industry. Visitors that have the experience of a lifetime while on holiday in New Zealand are more likely to recommend us to other people or return for a second visit themselves.

Our satisfaction research looks at which aspects of their New Zealand holiday visitors enjoyed the most. We can use this information to improve the experiences and products we offer to visitors.

Overall Experience
Of our visitors from China, 87 per cent were highly satisfied with their visit to New Zealand and 98 per cent are likely to recommend New Zealand as a holiday destination.

Visitors from China appreciate New Zealand’s natural landscape and scenery as well as our clean environment, with both aspects rating over 9 out of a possible 10 for satisfaction. However a number of aspects show relatively lower satisfaction amongst visitors from China, in particular our urban atmosphere, the availability of good food, adventure and value for money. These aspects need to be considered in a wider context along with consideration for the reasons Chinese visitors choose New Zealand as a holiday destination.

The Environment
59 per cent of visitors from China said that the New Zealand environment exceeded their expectations; 71 per cent thought the New Zealand environment appeared to be managed sustainably.

Planning and Information Sources
Of our Chinese visitors, 57 per cent make the decision to travel to New Zealand three months before they arrive. This is significantly shorter than the average of any other market.

Friends and family, guidebooks and newzealand.com are the sources of information used most by Chinese visitors when planning a New Zealand holiday.

Accommodation and Transport
Hotels and motels are the accommodation types used most by Asian visitors.

Coach tours, domestic flights and rental cars/vans are the transport types used most by holiday visitors from Asia.
