Media

Tourism New Zealand's International Media Programme has seen New Zealand achieve good media coverage in Thailand in the last few months.

Thailand's number one outbound travel magazine, Travel Around the World, brought readers to New Zealand in September to promote winter holidays. Their November 2008 issue will feature a 20-page cover story about New Zealand. Trips magazine featured a 10 page story about New Zealand and Matariki, the Maori New Year, in their July issue.

Next Step Television visited the South Island in September. Four 30-minute New Zealand episodes ran nationwide in October to an audience of 2.5 million households.

Weekly travel documentary, The Spirit of Adventure, will air four 30-minute New Zealand episodes on Channel 5 during November. This programme reaches around 1 million viewers in the Bangkok metropolitan area.

Thailand’s first New Zealand campervan holiday guidebook will be launched in January 2009, following a visit to New Zealand by writer Ukit Tangsubkul in May.

Trade

Two 2-day training sessions were held for the Thai Travel Agents Association in September, with a total of 60 travel agents attending.

Tourism New Zealand will participate jointly with Destination Rotorua in the 5th Thai International Travel Show in February/March 2009. This is the largest outbound travel show in Thailand, drawing over 350,000 people in 2008.

Campaign

A Thai language version of www.newzealand.com/travel will launch in early 2009 as a result of a partnership with MSN. Over 30 pages of information will be translated into Thai and made available through msn.com, with links back to www.newzealand.com.

Competitor Activity

The French Tourism Board has launched a specialist programme for the Thai travel trade to encourage them to sell holidays to France.

Tourism Australia invited 15 Aussie Specialist agents to join the "Premier Aussie Specialist Program", which aims to strengthen the skills of these selected companies in selling Australia. Tourism Australia is also launching the second phase of their Thai language website on www.msn.co.th between November and January, in an attempt to promote their campaign around the movie Australia.

India’s Tourism Board has been actively advertising destination India in Thailand’s leading travel and lifestyle magazines. Their advertisement promotes their website and contact details from Singapore.

Hong Kong’s Tourism Board continues to introduce new nature and bird-watching tours for free independent travellers following positive feedback from the similar tours in 2007.
