United States

Market Overview

The USA is New Zealand’s third largest market in terms of both visitor arrivals and expenditure.

North America Market Update

Annie Dundas, Regional Manager North America - August 2008

VIEW MARKET UPDATE

In the year ended July 2008 there were 216,853 visitors to New Zealand from the US, a 0.8 per cent decrease on the previous year.

The market has been soft recently, due to the volatile US economy, high airfares and the pending presidential election.

On the positive side, online sellers and smaller niche and luxury New Zealand specialists are reporting growth. US visitor arrivals increased by almost 15 per cent in January 2008, a reflection of the large number of American visitors cruising New Zealand waters.

Visitor arrivals from the US are forecast to increase annually by 1.3 per cent from 2008 to 2014. These visitors are also expected to stay longer and spend more than in the past.
