Cultural activities and experiences play an important role in the New Zealand visitor experience.
For the purposes of this research, a ‘Māori cultural element’ was defined as any experience specific to Māori culture such as performances, legends and stories, customs and traditions, arts and crafts, food or landmarks.
Overall, international visitors are highly satisfied with activities that are specifically based on a Māori cultural experience. Marae visits and Māori cultural performances both averaged at least 8.4 out of a possible 10 for level of satisfaction.
The satisfaction level and importance to the overall holiday experience of kayaking and city walks increased significantly when a Māori cultural element was incorporated.
