Lake Tekapo most Instagrammed place in NZ for 2016

5. Milford Sound, Fiordland

Lake Tekapo was the most Instagrammed place in New Zealand for 2016 as Instagram becomes an increasingly popular way for visitors and locals to share images of the country.

Instagram has become a platform of choice for visitors and Kiwis to share their best photos of New Zealand. Tourism New Zealand’s account @purenewzealand recently passed 500,000 followers and its images have been viewed 70 million times. The content is entirely created by visitors and locals, many using the Tourism New Zealand hashtag #NZMustDo.

Lake Tekapo shoots from number 6 in the list last year to top spot with Milford Sound and Auckland’s Queen Street, Takapuna Beach and Sky Tower rounding out the Top 5. The list is based on the number of images geo-tagged to specific locations.

Tourism New Zealand marketing director Andrew Fraser said the top 10 showed off some of the best tourism sites in New Zealand, such as Hobbiton, Milford Sound, Abel Tasman National Park and Franz Joseph Glacier.

“The top 10 list this year is fantastic – there are lakes, beaches, cities, glaciers, and movie sets. A great reflection of the range of diverse experiences we have on offer in New Zealand.

“The photography skills of visitors and New Zealanders on Instagram are quite remarkable – although they do have some pretty good landscapes and backdrops to work with!

“We’ve seen the continual growth of the Instagram platform mirrored in our activity: more and more people are sharing to #NZMustDo on Instagram, and our @purenewzealand account has grown 159% in the last 12 months alone! It is now has the third largest following of a destination globally. It shows that both visitors and New Zealanders alike are sharing a lot on Instagram and this is really important in showcasing New Zealand to the world.”
