This week, Golf Tourism New Zealand’s fourth golf tourism progress report was released to industry providing a summary of activity taken over the past year as part of the International Golf Tourism Strategy.
Andrew Fraser, Director of Marketing Tourism New Zealand says “It’s been a huge year for New Zealand golf with the country hosting a range of major international golf events. This exposure is priceless and has really showcased New Zealand as a must do golfing destination across the globe.”
“International golfers deliver millions to the economy each year, staying significantly longer and spending more than the average visitor.”
“It’s a fantastic result considering New Zealand is such a niche market competing for golf visitors against renowned golfing destinations like the USA.”
This week the third of three major international golfing events, the Asia Pacific Amateur will take place in Wellington for the first time.
Over the last few years there has been significant investment in new and existing courses resulting in New Zealand offering a range of uncrowded internationally ranked courses that are proving very attractive.
“Our golf visitors tell us they are highly satisfied with their New Zealand experience rating it 9.3 out of 10. A recommendation from friends and family is the single biggest driver for choosing a holiday destination so this ranking is incredibly important for continuing to attract golfers.”
“Nearly half of the golf visitors that come our way are incorporating vineyard experiences into their stay and this represents a huge opportunity for industry to further tap into.”
“Over the coming months we will be working closely with NZ Winegrowers to amplify the wine tourism experiences that are on offer and to look at opportunities for further wine product development.”
New Zealand has around 400 golf courses and offers incredible variety, from ocean front subtropical courses in the north to alpine settings in the south. Golfers can easily travel to a range of courses while in New Zealand sampling what each region has to offer on their way and this is a huge draw card.
