The latest insights from MBIE’s International Visitor Survey show international visitor spending increased by 4.3% in the 12 months to June 2025. This is a contribution of $12.1 billion to the New Zealand economy, including $7.6 billion from holiday visitors.
Visitors from the USA had a high average daily spending at $338. Australian daily spend increased significantly, up 17% YoY to $273.
Popular activities enjoyed by visitors include walking, hiking and trekking (71%), nature experiences such as mountains, lakes, beaches and national parks, and exploring public museums and art galleries.
The growth in international visitor spending is in line with the 5% increase in international arrivals over the same period. International visitor arrivals are now at 87% of pre-pandemic levels, with 3.38 million visitors arriving in New Zealand in the 12 months to June 2025. International visitor spending for the same period is now nominally at 106% of pre-pandemic levels, but at 86% when adjusted for inflation.
Tourism remains New Zealand’s second highest export industry, behind dairy.
