New Zealand reaches 3.7 million international visitor arrivals

New Zealand welcomed 3.7 million international visitors in the year to June 2026, reaching a key milestone in the recovery and growth of the country’s tourism sector.

Tourism New Zealand Chief Executive René de Monchy says achieving the arrivals goal is a significant moment for Aotearoa New Zealand and reflects the strength of international demand for the destination.

Overall international visitor arrivals grew by 8.9 percent over the year, with strong growth in holiday arrivals which increased by 15.3 percent, while conference arrivals grew by 16.7 percent. The arrivals growth rate has almost doubled from 5% a year ago.

New Zealand’s three largest visitor markets — Australia, the United States and China — also performed well. Australia, the country’s largest and most established market, delivered 16 percent growth in holiday arrivals, while China’s recovery was a standout, with holiday arrivals up 40 percent.

“A year ago, many commentators expected recovery to take until the second half of 2027. Reaching 3.7 million arrivals ahead of that timeframe shows the strength of New Zealand’s appeal and the impact of focused international marketing, aviation connectivity, industry partnerships and trade activity,” says de Monchy.

The milestone comes as international tourism continues to make an important contribution to New Zealand’s economy and communities. Visitor spend is growing in the regions, helping support tourism operators and regional economies.

The result reflects the work of many across the tourism system, including industry, airlines, trade partners, regional tourism organisations and government agencies.

“Achieving 3.7 million arrivals gives New Zealand strong momentum as we look ahead. Tourism New Zealand remains focused on growing high-quality demand and supporting the sector to build towards 3.9 million arrivals and $14.4 billion in international visitor spend by June 2027,” he says.
